Building Tools to
‍Connect Patients and Pharmacies
Seamlessly in Ghana

Background
"You’re the Expert—Tell Us What This Should Look Like."

Being the first designer in a startup is like embarking on an adventure with the leaders—we share perspectives and collaboratively draw the roadmap.
During the initial phase of the project, I was responsible for shaping the company’s brand identity, defining product requirements, and delivering a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) under tight timelines.
After the successful launch of the MVP, which generated significant revenue, I was invited back to design the pharmacy
dashboard
, focusing on creating a seamless experience for pharmacies to connect their operations with the platform.

Defining the Roadmap Together

With no product managers in place, I led discussions between our design team and the leadership—CEO Alex and CTO Ellie—to define goals and priorities. I asked key questions to clarify their vision:

What is the business goal at this stage?

What is the first task users should accomplish on the website?

What style, tone, and branding do you envision for your online presence?

The timeline of the project phase 1

After these discussions, we found that the main business goal was to attract more users. Based on that, we clarified that the design team’s main goals were:
1.Building a professional web presence.
2.Design features that meet the users' immediate needs.

Key Projects

In this section, I’ll highlight the key projects I led, including establishing a cohesive style guide and designing a patient portal.

Building a Professional Web Presence
"We want to stick to the color since it’s how people recognize us."

Challenge:
Even though the leadership—CEO and CTO—wanted to stick with the color palette used in their local events to maintain brand recognition, we found that the existing colors didn’t provide enough readability or accessibility for web design.

Approach:
To persuade the leadership to accept the color change, we proposed a refined palette that improved accessibility while keeping the brand’s tone. We demonstrated how the new colors would create a more professional web presence to attract users, a key goal for this phase. Visual comparisons of the website with both palettes helped secure their approval, and we built a style guide around the updated colors.

Result:
The new style guide provided a cohesive visual identity for the company’s digital platforms, enhancing readability, accessibility, and overall usability, while maintaining alignment with the brand’s established offline presence.

Addressing Immediate User Needs
"With COVID still around, we need to get this launched ASAP."

Challenge:
With an ambitious two-to-three-week timeline for the product launch, I faced the challenge of delivering high-quality designs at speed while building efficient collaboration with developers.

Approach:
To tackle the tight timeline and ensure efficient delivery, I focused on the following approaches:

  • Agile Design Workflow
  • Parallel Collaboration with Developers
  • Iterative Feedback Loops

Result:
I successfully delivered the product within the two-to-three-week timeline by adopting an agile approach, working in parallel with the developer, and using iterative feedback loops. The final design met users' immediate needs and aligned with business goals.

Phase 2: Pharmacy Dashboard
"With COVID still around, we need to get this launched ASAP."

Challenge:
The project faced a tight timeline, requiring me to design a pharmacy dashboard that streamlined the onboarding process for pharmacies. Additionally, the challenge was to leverage the platform to provide pharmacies with detailed insights about their online stores, helping them make more informed decisions.

Collaboration for Data Insights:
‍
To design an effective dashboard, I collaborated closely with the CTO to gain insights into the available data and understand what valuable information we could provide to pharmacies. Based on these discussions, I updated the dashboard to a new version that prioritized actionable insights, helping pharmacies make informed decisions about their online stores.

Streamlined Onboarding Flow:
‍
I designed a streamlined process that included two clear steps for establishing the online store. This design helped pharmacy owners set up their online stores efficiently and confidently.

Result:
We successfully launched the Pharmacy Owner's Dashboard on time, meeting the tight project deadline. The updated design streamlined the onboarding process and provided actionable insights, which contributed to an overall increase in user engagement.
